Centro Cultural de la Raza REmodel plans

Centro Cultural Remodel

The Centro Cultural de la Raza is a historical landmark of Balboa Park in San Diego. This center is filled with a rich history and unity that is immediately felt upon entering. The current layout of the cylindrical building, however, does not utilize the entirety of the space. Our goal is to revitalize the center and restore it to its full potential and functionality through an updated design.

Conceptual Photoshop vision

Before creating any concrete plans, I created Photoshop conceptual renders to present to the community.

Main Area Floor Plan

With feedback from the community, I focused my plans around creating a multifunctional space that worked for the variety of events that the Centro hosts. Instead of implementing a rigid and permanent layout, I designed the space to be easily transformed while maximizing each areas potential.

To create a multifunctional space, I designed moveable panels that run along tracks in the floor. These panels can be used for seating, display, or shifted back to maximize the area.

In a similar fashion to the cafe area, panels within the gallery will also run along multiple tracks that can be altered depending on the exhibition featured.
